Local SEO

Local ranking rests on three factors Google publishes openly, and only one of them can be changed quickly. Ivan Sp builds and maintains the signals that decide local pack and map visibility: Google Business Profile accuracy, citation consistency, and reviews earned inside Google’s actual policy. A business with one strong page and a neglected profile still loses to a weaker page backed by a well-maintained local presence.

Four Areas This Practice Covers

Why Policy Compliance Gets Named Directly

I name compliance first, because local visibility depends on a listing staying in good standing rather than merely optimised. A suspended Google Business Profile removes a business from local search entirely while an appeal processes, often for weeks. Every recommendation in this practice gets checked against actual policy before it gets suggested, not assumed safe because it sounds reasonable.

Single Location Compared to a Network

A single-location business needs its profile, citations, and reviews built out once and maintained. A multi-location or franchise business needs the same three things repeated correctly across every location, with genuine local research behind each one rather than one template applied everywhere.

Networks outgrowing individual per-location research eventually need a different method entirely, covered under location page generation at scale.

Where the Standard Local Advice Breaks Down

The usual advice
Get more reviews. Review count is the main local ranking factor, so volume is the priority.
What holds up in practice
Reviews feed prominence, which is one of three factors Google names. Relevance is the factor most open to direct work, and an empty services list wastes it entirely.

Picture a clinic running a review drive for six months. The count climbs from 12 to 90, and the local pack position does not move.

The profile still lists one category and no services. Every relevance signal the profile offers is sitting unused while the prominence signal is pushed hard.

I fill the structured fields first, because that work takes an afternoon. Reviews take months, and they compound better once relevance is already in place.

Six months of review requests is a real cost in staff time and goodwill. Spending it before the free fields are filled is the expensive order.

Four Things Commonly Assumed About Local SEO

How much of your local visibility depends on something you can actually change?

I meet these four assumptions on most first local calls.

Commonly assumedWhat actually holds
Review count is the main ranking factor.Reviews feed prominence, which is one of three factors Google names. Relevance is the factor most open to direct work.
A Google Business Profile is enough on its own.The profile is one signal among several. Website relevance and consistent citations carry a large share of the rest.
Being closer to the searcher decides everything.Distance is real and it is one factor of three. Relevance and prominence work routinely outweigh a few hundred metres.
Local SEO is simpler than national SEO.Local adds a compliance layer with real consequences. A policy breach removes the listing entirely while an appeal runs.
Adding your city to the business name helps.Google’s representation guidelines require the real-world name, and keyword-stuffed names are a common cause of suspension.

The two strongest relevance fields on most profiles are sitting empty and cost an afternoon to fill. Six months of review requests will not make up for leaving them blank.

What Decides Local Visibility

Google’s three stated factors
Relevance, distance, and prominence, published in Google’s own local ranking guidance.
Relevance
How well a profile and website match the query. The factor most open to direct work.
Distance
Proximity between the searcher and the business. Not something optimisation changes.
Prominence
How well known a business is, drawn from reviews, citations, links, and web presence.
The local pack
The three business listings shown above organic results for a local query.
Primary surfaces
Google Business Profile, Google Maps, Bing Places, and Apple Business Connect.
Structured data
LocalBusiness markup, including areaServed and openingHoursSpecification.

A Worked Example: Two Profiles, Same Street

Consider two clinics roughly 400 metres apart competing for the same query. The comparison below is illustrative, chosen to show which levers actually move. No client engagement is described here.

Ivan Sp cannot move the distance row, and neither can anyone else. Every other row in that table is work, and together they outweigh 200 metres.

Local ranking works like a shortlist for a job. Being nearby gets the application read, and the rest of the page decides whether anyone calls.

The citation row is the quiet one. Eleven consistent listings out of forty means twenty-nine sources are describing the business slightly differently.

How a Local Engagement Runs

I work through the sequence below, and the compliance check comes before any optimisation.

  1. Read Google’s guidelines for representing a business, and check the current profile against each rule.
  2. Confirm the business name in the profile matches the real-world name exactly, with no added keywords.
  3. Set the primary category to the single closest match, then add secondary categories for real services.
  4. Populate the services list in full, since an empty services list leaves relevance signals unused.
  5. Audit name, address, and phone number across every existing citation, and record each mismatch.
  6. Correct mismatched citations at the source, starting with the directories that feed others.
  7. Tag the profile website link with UTM parameters, so profile traffic is separable in GA4.
  8. Add LocalBusiness structured data to the site, matching the profile field for field.
  9. Build a review request into the customer journey, asking every customer rather than only happy ones.
  10. Track profile calls, direction requests, and website clicks monthly through the Performance report.

How Local Work Is Scoped

I scope local work by location count, since each location carries its own profile and citation set.

What arrives
A profile audit, a citation correction list, a review system specification, and a monthly tracking setup.
Typical duration
Two to four weeks for a single location, longer where citations need correcting at source.
What the client supplies
Profile ownership, the legal business details, and access to existing directory accounts.
Included
Compliance check, profile build-out, citation audit, review system design, and structured data.
Not included
Buying reviews, review gating, and any tactic that risks the listing.
What changes the estimate
Several locations, a service area business, or a history of duplicate listings.
How it is quoted
After a short scoping call, once location count is known.

Tools and Primary Sources

The references below define the rules and the surfaces named above. Each opens in a new tab.

Audit Your Own Listing in Ten Minutes

I suggest a check that finds the most common local faults quickly.

  1. Search Google for your business name plus your city, and open your own profile.
  2. Count the categories listed, and count the services listed beneath them.
  3. Search for your business name in quotation marks, and open the first five directory listings.
  4. Compare the address and phone number on each against your profile, character by character.

An empty services list is unused relevance signal that costs nothing to fill. Two different phone number formats across directories is a prominence signal working against you.

Common Questions About Local SEO

How long does local SEO work take to show results?

Profile and citation fixes can show movement within weeks. Review generation and ongoing posting cadence build value more gradually, over months, since they depend on accumulating genuine activity rather than a one-time setup change.

Does local SEO matter for a business that serves customers online only?

Less directly, though a physical or service-area presence still benefits from an accurate Google Business Profile if the business qualifies for one under Google’s guidelines. A purely online business without a service area is better served by the work covered under content strategy and on-page SEO.

Can local SEO work run alongside a franchise’s corporate marketing team?

Yes, and it usually needs to. Local execution, especially review responses and profile updates, often sits with local staff or franchisees, while strategy and research get coordinated at the corporate level.

Can local SEO overcome being further from the searcher?

Sometimes, though not always. Distance is a real factor Google states openly, and relevance and prominence work often outweigh a few hundred metres. A business several suburbs away rarely outranks a well-optimised competitor next door.
